Rename Files Without Uploading Them

WebRenamer reads the files you select inside your browser. It generates new names, warns about collisions, and creates a downloadable ZIP locally. File content is not sent to the WebRenamer server for processing. The originals are never modified.

What actually happens to your files?

1. Select files

The browser gives this page access to only the selected files or folder contents.

2. Change names

Rules and previews are calculated in page memory. Optional metadata extraction also runs locally.

3. Export a ZIP

A browser-side ZIP packages unchanged file bytes under the new filenames. Original files stay untouched.

How to verify browser-side processing

  1. Open your browser's Developer Tools and its Network panel before selecting a small non-sensitive test file.
  2. Use the renamer: load a file, change its name, and export the ZIP.
  3. Observe network requests separately from file operations. Site assets, analytics (if enabled) and extensions can produce network traffic; this does not indicate the selected file was uploaded.
  4. If you need stronger assurance, inspect the front-end implementation and test in a clean browser profile. A network log alone is not a complete security audit.

Privacy does not mean in-place renaming

Some desktop utilities update filenames in their original folders. WebRenamer deliberately exports renamed copies instead. This is reversible, but you must download and unpack the ZIP to use the new names. For repeated native filesystem tasks, consider your operating system's built-in rename tools.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebRenamer upload my files?

No. The selected file bytes are processed client-side to preview names and generate the ZIP archive. Normal site requests, analytics where configured, and any external links are separate from the selected file bytes.

Does the tool modify my originals?

No. It creates copies with new names in a ZIP and leaves your original files where they were.

Can I rename confidential files?

The processing workflow is local, but organizations should assess their own browser, extension, network and device policies before using any website with sensitive files.

Can I rename files in place in the browser?

WebRenamer currently does not offer in-place filesystem renaming. Browser access APIs vary by device and permission. Download the reviewed ZIP and replace originals yourself after checking it.
